Alpaca and Blue Faced Leicester Slate Aran

Introducing our first super soft, super cosy Aran yarn.  We have created this yarn from blending fleece from local alpacas with finest Blue Faced Leicester fleece. Spun at the Border Mill in the Scottish Borders this a versatile, 100% British  2-ply Aran ideal for autumn and winter knits and crochet projects.  We have created three natural shades – classic cream, pebble and slate by blending different coloured alpaca fleeces.

The alpaca fleece brings the soft slate colour and softness, and the Blue Faced Leicester ensures the yarn has strength and structure.   My initial project with the classic cream shade was the Earl Grey hat by Clare Devine – I’m really pleased with how it turned out.  I am not an expert knitter, and it survived a couple of false starts when my cables went wonky!

We sent the yarn to Kate at Hawthorn Cottage Craft who kindly agreed to try it out.  She thought it was ‘absolutely beautiful’  Hear the full review (she said lots more) on her podcast Episode 15 on YouTube.  A really encouraging review.   you can find a link to the podcast in our News section – ‘Absolutely beautiful’ – review of our new Aran

The super soft Aran yarn is a blend of 70% alpaca fleece and 30% Blue Faced Leicester sheep fleece.  The warm slate shade has been created by blending alpaca fleece from dark brown Henry from a small organic farm in Aberdeenshire and graphite grey Cortez from Higham Alpacas in Fife (pictured), with Blue Faced Leicester sheep fleece.

Approximately 160m per 100g skein.

We used size 4mm needles for the swatch and achieved 20 stitches and 26 rows.  We would recommend 3.5mm needles to show off cables and twists.    It would be ideal for jumpers and is soft enough to be next to skin for accessories.
