Alpaca and Blue Faced Leicester Light Aran/Worsted

Introducing our first super soft, super cosy Aran yarn.  We have created this yarn from blending fleece from local alpacas with finest Blue Faced Leicester fleece. Spun at the Border Mill in the Scottish Borders this a versatile, 100% British  2-ply Aran ideal for autumn and winter knits and crochet projects.  We have created three natural shades – classic cream, pebble and slate by blending different coloured alpaca fleeces.

The alpaca fleece brings the soft slate colour and softness, and the Blue Faced Leicester ensures the yarn has strength and structure.   My initial project with the classic cream shade was the Earl Grey hat by Clare Devine – I’m really pleased with how it turned out.  I am not an expert knitter, and it survived a couple of false starts when my cables went wonky!

We sent the yarn to Kate at Hawthorn Cottage Craft who kindly agreed to try it out.  She thought it was ‘absolutely beautiful’  Hear the full review (she said lots more) on her podcast Episode 15 on YouTube.  A really encouraging review.   you can find a link to the podcast in our News section – ‘Absolutely beautiful’ – review of our new Aran

The super soft light Aran/worsted  yarn is a blend of 70% alpaca fleece and 30% Blue Faced Leicester sheep fleece.  The alpaca fleeces all come from small British herds.

The warm slate shade has been created by blending alpaca fleece from dark brown Henry from a small organic farm in Aberdeenshire and graphite grey Cortez from Higham Alpacas in Fife (pictured).  This is the heaviest blend and is approximately 160m per 100g skein.

The classic cream combines fleece from Heatherbell Alpacas in Northumberland and fleece from Columbus, a fine white boy from Fife.  There are  approximately 180m per skein.

The pebble shade has been created by blending alpaca fleece from Cuillin and Curly from Aberdeenshire, and Marvel from Fife.  There are approximately 180m per 100g skein.

The chocolate (my favourite)  combines the fleece from our girls Stella and Mary and  a handsome boy alpaca called Kamanwati.    There are approximately 195mm per 100g

We would recommend 3.75mm needles to show off cables and twists.  The yarns are ideal for jumpers and are soft enough to be next to skin for accessories.

If you only need a little for details or trims, try the mini skeins which combines 50g of the cream with two other shades – just let us know which ones you would like!
